Cheers. Smiles. Gratitude.
February 06, 2015 was a milestone not only for the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) but most importantly, for the homeless and sick children who are the beneficiaries of these institutions, respectively. With the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement for the Transfer of Ownership of the 3.7-hectare property to the hospital, those in need are truly victorious.
Present during the event were Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette L. Garin, NHA General Manager Atty. Chito M. Cruz, PCMC Director Julius A. Lecciones, MD; Senate Committee on Health Chairman Teofisto D. Guingona III, Sen. Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino, and Ang Nars Party-list Representative Leah Paquiz.
“The true winners here are all the beneficiates of the PCMC and NHA. We will continuously do our best to fulfill our mandates and help each and every one of you to have safer, healthier, and brighter futures,” said GM Cruz.
In 2013, the issue of land ownership of the property where the children’s hospital was located escalated when the NHA sent a letter asking for its intent to buy the property.
After Senate hearings were conducted to discuss and resolve the issue, the House of Representatives provided the funds needed by the PCMC to purchase the land through the 2015 General Appropriations Act.
As first tranche of payment to NHA, PhP 500-million was included in the GAA with another PhP 442-million to be included in the national budget next year.
“This day proves that when it comes to the welfare of Filipino children, everyone will come to their rescue and let their voices be heard,” added Dir. Lecciones.
Funds gathered by the NHA through the transfer will be used to provide more housing units to homeless Filipinos and calamity victims across the nation.
